"First time fishing for black porgy" by Hanadou

「初めてのチヌフカセ釣り」花堂

On January 18th, I went to Hayato New Port in Kirishima City with my nephew, Souta, to go black porgy fishing.

Souta, who will be a junior high school student in the spring, has been interested in living things since he was a child, and in addition to carp, catfish, and fish he catches in the river, he also keeps turtles at home. When the season comes, he goes out to catch and raise stag beetles and rhinoceros beetles. He is a boy who loves living things.

This was Souta's first time fishing for black porgy, and of course his first time using float fishing.

I taught him various things, such as how to scatter ground bait, how to attach bait, how to cast the tackle, and how to operate the line. For a while, he couldn't reach the target point and was inconsistent, going left or right. With each try, he started to cast closer to the target. Once he was able to cast closer to the target, he started to have fun and his smile spread.

"It's pulling! It's pulling!" he exclaimed, very excited as he seemed to have caught a fish for the first time.

I raised the rod and struggled alongside the running black porgy, saying, "Reel it in, reel it in, tilt the rod to the right, then to the left!"

I finally managed to get it to float and scooped it up with a dip net.

"Is that a black porgy? Yesssss!" He exclaimed, still feeling excited even after catching it. I was so grateful to the 30cm black porgy being caught.

Even though the current wasn't moving after that, we managed to catch a few nice sized fish. Seeing Souta happy no matter what size he caught reminds me of when I first started fishing and makes me happy too.

He worked hard to catch fish without giving up until the end of the fishing season.

"Next time I want to catch a 40cm fish," he declared, declaring his next goal.

I hope that he will show us how much he has grown as a junior high school student.
