In mid-August, I went fishing at an offshore pier in Hiroshima Bay, Hiroshima Prefecture, aiming to catch summer black porgy.

This time, we participated in the Pier Chinu Pair Match Tournament, and about 40 people gathered.

The rules are that participants split into pairs and go up to two offshore piers in Hiroshima Bay, and compete for the length of the two fish they catch, with each pair including the largest fish.

In hot weather, keeping multiple fish after catching them can weaken them, so weighing only one fish is gentler on the fish and easier for anglers to manage, making it a very good regulation.

The place I went up to was the "White Lighthouse" located near Hiroshima Port.

About half the group, about 20 people, lined up here.

The mix of 4 reliable types of ground bait that I used is well balanced in terms of turbidity, particles, and sinking speed, making it suitable for use in any season.

I mixed in two pieces of krill and one piece of ground shrimp.

The fish were very active at dawn, and there were bites while the rig was still reaching the depth, so it seemed that the black porgy were floating up to the middle layer, chasing the bait.

During this opportunity, I was able to catch several good-sized fish of around 45 cm.

However, just before noon, the fish's activity changed dramatically, and bites became extremely rare, so we had to resort to picking them out.

I tried various things, such as targeting the edge of the pier, changing the pace of casting the bait, and rotating the bait. Catching a black porgy gave me a special sense of accomplishment.

In terms of overall catches, all participants caught black porgy, including several ageless ones, with the largest measuring 52cm, making it a high-level tournament.

Although our pair did not place highly, we were happy that we both enjoyed catching a lot of summer black porgy.

It's still hot during the day, but please enjoy summer black porgy while taking care of your health.
