Black porgy fishing contest at Kagoshima Minami Port, Kamikihara
On August 15th, I was invited by my acquaintance Ueno to participate in a black porgy fishing competition (total weight of two fish) so I went to Kagoshima's Minami-ko Port to fish for black porgy.
We gathered at the location at 5:00 and started fishing at 5:30.
This time, I'll be attacking the bottom with one corner of krill! I'll be using one bag each of raw black porgy and raw pupa.
The bait I prepared was 2L of fresh krill, the ``corn'' series that the fish loves to eat, sweet shrimp dango, Houtama Nerimaru, and amiebi dango 70.
This is a strategy that focuses on Nerie as the main attacker.
At around 5:50, the rod float disappeared with a span using the Amiebi Dango 70, but it was only a small fish.
Next came another copperhead. The bait was big, so I left it large to prevent bait-stealing, but the copperhead ate it regardless.
After using the tsukee three times, I rotated them.
At around 6:30, the float with a krill was banged. The fish was knocking the rod, so it was a black porgy, but it was not a good size, about 35cm.
Then, at around 6:40, the float with a krill was hit again. This time it was quite heavy. It was a decent size of 6cm.
The total weight of the two fish was the limit! From here on, I aimed for a better shape to make a switch.
This time I used sweet shrimp bait and at around 7:40 I got a bite and the float went straight in!
I couldn't replace it with a 35cm black porgy...
Ueno was also bending his rod smoothly, so we were talking about today being a great catch, but it seemed the sea god got angry as the bites became fewer and we had to go back for more training.
Then, around 9 o'clock, my senior colleague Mr. Tanaka came to play with his children and grandchildren.
It was a completely relaxing time, with his grandson throwing bait and enjoying the sight of the fish gathering around, and helping Ueno with the rabbitfish he had caught.
Although he or she is still a young child, I hope the grandchild will grow to love fishing.
The match resumed around 9:30.
From this point on, there really were no more bites, but around 11 o'clock I managed to catch one 40cm class black porgy using a sweet shrimp dango.
When I was off guard, I lost a big one using the Amiebi Dango 70 and Hougyoku Renma. The initial pull was weak, so I thought I'd hold it in and enjoy the fight, but it just swam towards me. It was really strong. That's something I'll reflect on this time.
This time, no matter what bait I used, the fish were active until around 8:30, but in the second half, the krill didn't work and I had to get creative with the dough bait.
And I found I got more bites by letting the bait crawl rather than letting it float.
We finished fishing at 12:30, and although I had caught four fish and Ueno had caught five, I still managed to win the match, with our fish weights being 2604g and 2435g.
I forgot my hat that day and it was a very hot day fishing, but luckily there was a breeze. However, the hot weather is still continuing.
Be sure to take precautions against heatstroke when enjoying fishing.
