In late September, I went fishing for black porgy at Hayato New Port in Kirishima City.
It's a short challenge from 15pm after work until 18pm when the sun sets.
After preparing the bait, I immediately dropped about 30 to 40 cups into the target spot.
While setting up the tackle, I also throw in about 20 scoops of bait to appeal to the black porgy.
On this day, the wind was at our backs, making it easy to cast our tackle and bait far.
About 40 minutes after we started, I felt a slight tug on the line.
This was a cute-sized black porgy, about 30cm.
"Next time, call your daddy!" I said, gently releasing it.
However, the ones that approached to the ground bait were all cute sizes, around 30cm...
"Just be patient for now," I told myself, and believing that the father black porgy would come close, I threw out a lot of bait and cast the line again.
After a while, the cute black porgy seems to have calmed down and the bait is left behind.
I thought maybe it was a daddy black porgy coming near, so I concentrated on casting the line, and suddenly the line at the tip of my rod was pulled and I got a front bite.
Then, after a few seconds, there was a "crack, crack, crackle!" and the line was forcefully flicked out of the way of my fingers that were holding the spool.
The fish I caught was a 45cm daddy black porgy that made me enjoy an energetic pull. It was a nice size increase.
After that, the current slackened and the bottom current did not seem to be moving, so I decided to lighten the buoyancy of the float from size 000 to size 00.
In addition, I changed the hook from size 3 to size 1.
I decided to aim with the image of the rig slowly sinking.
There was silence for a while as the tide did not move.
It was past 5pm and at dusk I was wondering whether to reduce the size of the line, but as there were no bites from any fish I decided to go for it and change from 1.25 to 1.
Then it was the second throw.
In the middle layer, something was pulling the line with a whoosh.
But there was no next bite, so I slowly pulled the line to lure it in... Twitch! Twitch! Twitch! The fish got hooked and started running.
Along with a pleasant weight, I can feel the typical nod and nod of a black porgy as it shakes its head through the rod.
It was a slow process because I was using #1 line. What came up was a 44cm black porgy.
I'm grateful to the black porgy for coming at the very end. It was a short 3 hours, but I'm glad I got to see a black porgy's face.
I went home after washing away the ground bait, hoping to catch a fish of a size that is over 50cm next time.
