In early August, I participated in a black porgy fishing tournament organized by monitor Kamikihara. The total weight of three black porgy fish is the deciding factor. There were 8 participants in total, and the top winners were given a gift certificate for a luxury ice cream, so I was really motivated.
We went to the same fishing spot as Kamikihara-san, "Wood Port." There were two other participants, so four of us cast our rods.
The rig used was a No. 00 chinu rod, No. 1.5 line, No. 1.25 leader, a No. 00 to No. 000 float depending on the situation, and No. 1 to No. 3 chinu hooks.
After we started fishing, we started catching some grouper fish, but the black porgy just wouldn't bite.
Then, starting with the first black porgy, participant Y-san started catching black porgy consistently. Kamikihara-san and A-san also caught black porgy, but I was still unable to catch a black porgy and was getting impatient, thinking, "The luxury ice cream gift certificate is getting further away..."
There were about two hours left. I thought that if I continued like this, I would end up empty-handed, not to mention winning a gift certificate, so I decided to move closer to the concrete pillar structure.
There was only a little bait left in the bucket, so I concentrated. I moved and on the second cast, there was a bite that pulled the line smoothly, and when I set the hook, it ran off with a powerful weight towards the structure. I struggled desperately not to let the line out, but I finally managed to bring it closer.
I couldn't help but say "Thank you" to the black porgy I had finally caught, and immediately went to the stringer. It seemed that the black porgy had indeed been caught on this structure.
A few casts later, I got another hit. When I set the hook, it ran towards the structure just like before. I didn't raise the rod upright, but laid it down on its side and slowly fought the fish. I caught the longest fish of the day, 44cm.
I tried to catch just one more fish, but time ran out and I had to call it a day.
As a result of the weigh-in, I didn't place highly and came in 5th place. I couldn't get the high-end ice cream gift certificate, but I did manage to avoid going home empty-handed.
This time, moving closer to the structure led to a catch, which made me realize once again that the black porgy is in areas that are changing.
I want to continue enjoying the powerful summer black porgy.
