On May 18th, I went fishing again to the Hikiyama River diversion embankment in Aira City, aiming to catch ageless black porgy.
The rainy season began in southern Kyushu on the 16th, marking the first time in 71 years that it has begun before Amami. Even so, it's disappointing that the rainy season has begun so early.
Then, when I checked the weather forecast, I saw that it wasn't going to rain for a few hours. "This is our chance!" I thought, and quickly got ready and headed out.
When I arrived at the fishing spot, the seawater was murky because it had just rained.
When I started fishing, the upper tide was sliding and the bottom current didn't seem to be moving, and even after an hour I still couldn't get any bites from any black porgy.
As I continued to fish tenaciously, the tide started to push into the harbor from the ocean, and the tide line started to get closer and closer. Thinking this might be my chance, I cast a lot of bait into the spot and concentrated on letting my tackle drift.
Then, the main line tensed slightly, but the line did not run and I retrieved the tackle. When I checked the bait, the krill seemed to be crushed. I wondered if this was the main target, a black porgy? I looked forward to the next one.
Then the line runs all at once and I catch a bite, and while applying tension until the run stops, I open the bail and let out the line. When it calms down, I raise the rod and fight, and I feel the characteristic pull of a black porgy shaking its head. Because it was low tide with low water, the fish runs energetically and entertains me.
I carefully floated the fish while being careful of the tetrapods at my feet. It was a lively 44cm black porgy that was safely caught in the dip net. It was far from ageless, but I was grateful that the black porgy had finally come, and I felt relieved.
I was trying to catch the next one, hoping to catch a bigger one, but it was a struggle. I caught some red sea bream and frog flounder, but gradually the waves started to get bigger and the water got muddier. I tried casting far into the ocean where the water was less muddy, but there were no bites... I held on for a while, but the rain started to come down hard, so unfortunately I decided to call it a day.
Once again I wasn't able to encounter any black porgy, but I was glad to be able to see the black porgy's face.
