In mid-November, I went fishing for black porgy at Ohashi River in Shimane Prefecture.
The Ohashi River connects Lake Shinji with the sea, and in season it is a great spot for black porgy to pass through.
The black porgy that grows in Lake Shinji, which feeds mainly on corbicula clams, is known as Susanoo-Chinu and captivates anglers with its powerful pull.
This time, I attended a social gathering hosted by local people.

We boarded a sightseeing boat and landed on Kitsunemori Island in the middle of the river.
35 participants took their fishing spots at equal intervals.

As for the mixture of bait we used, I chose one that had enough weight to sink properly even in the current.
Since I didn't know what kind of bait-stealers there were, I mixed in some Kizamicco plus raw pupae and prepared the corn and pupae to use as bait.

When we started fishing, there was no tide movement, so it was easy to fish, but the fish weren't responding very well.
I spoke to a local expert fishing next to me, and he told me that the standard pattern is to let the bait flow in the current, along the drop-off in front, so now is the time to be patient.

In that case, rather than targeting one spot, I will try point fishing, casting my fishing line up, down, left and right to increase the chances of encountering fish.
After a few casts, the long-awaited hit came. The water was shallow, so once hooked, the fish ran sideways with force. It felt quite heavy, and the first one was a good-sized black porgy measuring 45cm.

About two hours after we started fishing, the tide finally started to change. As expected, the fish were gradually becoming more active and rods were bending all around us.

I was worried about the bait-stealers, but I was relieved to hear that they were gobies, dace, and mullet in the Ohashi River, with few troublesome pufferfish and filefish.
In order to make the bait stand out clearly so that the black porgy can find it, I mainly rotated between ``Namaikikikun Yellow'' and ``Namaikikikun Half Boiled'', and I got consecutive bites.

By the time I finished fishing at 5pm, I had caught more than 5 fish, most of which were in the 45cm class.
I was also able to catch a fish over 50cm for the first time in a while, which was a great way to enjoy the Ohashi River for the first time, and it was also a day where I was amazed at its great potential.

Please come and visit Ohashi River or Lake Shinji in Shimane Prefecture, where you can try to catch your dream 60cm fish.
