My first largescale blackfish Kamikihara
On Sunday, January 5th, I went to Bonotsu in Minamisatsuma City, Kagoshima to go fishing for largescale blackfish with some junior members from my club.
The two of us went fishing for the first time on Friday, January 3rd, but in tough conditions we were toyed with by sea chubs and ended up without a catch, so this was a revenge trip for the two.
This day was much easier than the strong winds and rough weather two days ago.
The weather is important after all.
This time I used 2 krill blocks, 1 bag of GMAX and 2 bags of GREAT GURE for one day.
For bait, we prepared raw krill, Nama iki-kun, and semi-boiled Nama iki-kun, both in size M.
Since we were on the second boat, we were able to get onto the rocks around 2 o'clock at a rapid called Osame, and for some reason I have a high chance of being taken to this rapid.
Today, a torrent of currents flowing in the opposite direction to the main tide is coming at us.
I carefully searched around my feet and offshore, trial and erroring in a spot I'd never fished in before.
Since the bait was being taken away, I decided to switch the bait to half-boil and saw what would happen, and then I got a hit from a starry halfbeak, followed by a sea chub, a blue-barred parrotfish, and a parrotfish in quick succession.
Even though the current was strong, we were able to catch a few stone pufferfish in places where the tide slackened.
The rod bends like this, but I can't see any largescale blackfish.
At around 11 o'clock, I started to get impatient and returned to my usual spot. Although the tide was against me, I steadily fished in the twisted area near the edge of the current that wouldn't get caught in the main current, and I got a small bite! I was able to catch a largescale blackfish.
My junior also managed to catch one, so we both got to catch our first largescale blackfish and achieved our minimum goal.
Since long-tailed ones come to shallow depths, I moved the bait and tackle a little closer to the edge and went deeper (about 3 rods), and then I got a nice snatch!
I was also able to see a 41cm one.

When the main current was weaker, the fish were biting further out, but generally there were more bites closer to the edge.
Although I didn't catch a huge amount of fish, I was able to see the face of a largescale blackfish, so I'm happy with it.
The full-scale largescale blackfish season is just beginning.
I hope to have a safe and enjoyable fishing experience this year as well.
