[First time in Tokuyama area] Takahashi, Oita Prefecture
On Saturday, April 26th, I went fishing in the Tokuyama area of Setouchi, Yamaguchi Prefecture.
The fishing trip members were a impressive bunch, including young Nagamatsu from Oita, Honda from Kizakura staff and the skilled Nagano from Kitakyushu, and Ochi Masato and Nakahara, who are both very familiar with the Tokuyama area.
This will be our first time in the Tokuyama area, so we're looking forward to seeing how it all unfolds.
The ferry we used was Eiyumaru.
We greeted the captain and set sail just after 5am.
The first half features Daichi and Furushima.
There was a point where the tide was relatively strong and a pond that looked like it might attract black porgy, so after receiving a detailed explanation, I was able to set up my fishing spot from the pond side.
I cast the bait while visually predicting the black porgy's spots, but the black porgy was inactive and no bait-eaters came out.
There was no contact from the black porgy for an hour, so we changed locations.
The next fishing spot is an offshore point with some tide flowing through.
I made some major changes to the rig and cast it with the idea of synchronizing it with the point where the bait was accumulating, and I got some contact from the fish, but the bite was small and didn't result in a hit.
After fine-tuning the depth, I got a clear bite after a few casts, and a small black porgy of just over 30cm appeared.
It was great catching my first black porgy in a new area.
After confirming the pattern and the shelf where the bait was hitting, I caught a second, slightly larger black porgy along the same course, but then the tide turned and I was no longer able to fish along the same course, so I changed fishing spots.
I tried my best for the remaining time at the first fishing spot, but I wasn't able to see the face of the black porgy, so my time ran out in the first half.
The second half was in Shimokouzu, performed by Daichi and Nagano.
After the current changed, as predicted, a southerly wind started blowing and the waves got stronger, but it was comfortable in the shelter of the wind.
Although it was an offshore wind, you could clearly see the algae on the seabed.
The three of us started fishing, taking turns at the fishing spots.
Right from the start, Daichi caught a lot of black porgy fish one after another through the overgrown seaweed and pulled them out, which was a very educational experience for me to watch.
I tried various things in the second half, changing the equipment, but I couldn't see the face of a black porgy so it was time to call it a day.
We were not able to cast our rods together today, but Honda caught a 50.5cm belly-full ageless fish on his first cast in the morning. The drop in water temperature made it a little tough, but we all had a catch, and it was a fun fishing trip.
On the way back, we stopped off at a ramen restaurant popular among anglers, where we had a lively discussion about fishing and enjoyed some delicious ramen before disbanding.
